Rhetoric in Kingdom Of Heaven

            This month I chose to do something slightly different. I based this blog on a slightly narrower topic. Still having to do with movies and rhetoric, this month I decided to pull out a small speech used by a character in a movie which contains various different appeals of rhetoric. This month I chose a movie that really caught my attention once I saw it. The movie I decided to create my blog on for this month of November is “Kingdom Of Heaven”.

            “Kingdom of heaven” is a movie based on the 12^th Century Crusades. This movie is a drama of “Balian” the main character looking for a reason to live after he lost everything he had, which were his wife and his son. Balian while working as a blacksmith is approached by a man who reveals he is his true father. His father was a knight and so he offered Balian his newfound son to go with him and his knights to defend the Holy City of Jerusalem. He accepts and once arriving he goes through many different difficulties where he is faced with death and uncertainty.

            Within this movie Balian makes a small speech he says” It has fallen to us to defend Jerusalem, and we have made our preparations as well as they can be made. None of us took this city from Muslims. No Muslim of the great army now coming against us was born when this city was lost. We fight over an offence we did not give, against those who were not alive to be offended. What is Jerusalem? Your holy places lie over the Jewish temple that the Romans pulled down. The Muslim places of worship lie over yours. Which is more holy? The wall? The Mosque? The Sepulcher? Who has claim? No one has claim. All have claim!” Throughout his speech Balian uses the power of Logos(reason) and rhetorical Questions. He uses Logos by stating the obvious, which was that no one is truly fighting for what they called the Holy City. They were just fighting because they were ordered to. He also states that those who are defending it had the same right as those who were fighting for it. He states that it is for anyone to claim. The obvious though is that those who live there have more to loose because that had been their home for more that the past century, therefore they had more to fight for. He uses rhetorical questions throughout his speech to better give a transition to his use of logos.

            Throughout the movie there were many uses of appeals used in many different dialogues throughout the characters. I believe that Rhetoric truly stands out in movie because the way they state what they are trying to say gives out a better tone. “Kingdom of Heaven” is a movie I would recommend to anyone it contains what I believe a good movie would have action, action, and more action. 

Rhetoric in Dont be a Menace(parody)

I have recently seen the movie "Dont Be A Menace In South Central" I believe that this movie would be a good movie to write about because different views and tones. I saw a lot of different examples in this movie about rhetoric that made it confusing because it would change from serious to comedy. The movie dont be a menace is a movie dealing with the life of a few gangsters in the city of South Central. They try to show you the sopposable daily life of people in the hood. Through out the movie they dont really use many different rhetorical devices but they do incorporate devices such as logos pathos and ethos in their tones.
"Tray i dont want you hanging out in the streets, i want you to stay in school because without an education the only job you will get is selling drugs, pimping woman, or working security for eddie Murphy. Now i have done what i can i got my education and worked two jobs to support you but i cant teach you how to be a man only your father can do that." This was one of the quotes the movie began with, this quote can be used both as Ethos and Pathos. It can be seen as Ethos because the Tray's mother is using her background and education to backup what she is telling him about being someone in life. She is creditable because she has actually become a positive black female in the movie. She is also using Pathos in her small speech because she is applying all the hardships she went to towards her son and telling him that all shes gone through was for him. She applies to his sense of emotion to make him feel more on the fact that he has to become some one in life.
Another example well used in the movie to cause a sense of seriousness as well as comedy is preechs a formal gang member turned activist. When he is introduced he starts saying." You all need to stop using nigger. You see It is terms like nigger that the white community uses to take the self esteem from another race. Oh yea. Remind me to pick up my laundry from that mother F$#$%^ chick up the street." the sense of seriousness he causes by explaining the situation of the term "niger" causes a serious effect but turns into comedy when he changes it when he uses another curse word to describe someone else.
This movie is really interesting, it causes interest because of the tone they use through out the movie. The change in word usage and rhetoric through the movie causes a hook and makes you wanna keep watching it. I really recommend this movie to anyone who likes comedy perodies. This movie is a parody done to an actual drama from the actual hood.

Introduction

Welcome everyone to a world of movies. Where action, drama, fiction, nonfiction, science, and horror is found in the words created by a character. Movies are a fascinating. It is amazing the way a character uses the words he speaks to influence the tone of a movie. With one small dialogue in a movie you can know what the movie will talk about or what the plot will be.
Movies use rhetoric for more than expressing the genre of a movie. They also use rhetoric to show emotion. A movie with a bad rhetoric is bad movie. A good movie to me is classified by how good graphics are and how good the characters are. This means that if a character does not express good rhetoric i would not even bother watching it. I hope you enjoy reading about various movies and how their voices influence the film in a magnificent way.

Rhetoric In Movies (Pan's Labyrinth)

Pans Labyrinth is a movie that takes place in 1944. Pan Labyrinth is about a girl who loved fairy tales. She is sent with her pregnant mother to live with her stepfather. Her stepfather was a Captain of the Spaniard army. When she arrives in the small town where she was to live she is visited by a fairy at night. This fairy leads her to a labyrinth where in the center she finds an old faun. He tells her she is a princess and in order to prove that her royal blood was still in tact she had to complete several different tasks. In the end of the movie it doesn't explain whether all she saw was a dream or a real reality because after her stepfather shoots her and she dies she end ups with the king which is suppose to be her real father.
Ofelia which is the main character uses her language and tone in the movie to describe her emotions and her actions. The way she talks to her mother about how she feels about her stepfather truly symbolizes her discomfort towards him. Her problems with her stepfather and her love over fairy tales is what leads her into a world of magic.
Another really strong for of rhetoric that is shown through out the movie is the way she talks to the faun. She always talks with a questionable tone. Her tone in the movie make her sound uncomfortable. She doesn't know what to do or believe but she does what the faun tells her because of the troubles she goes through in her home. Towards the ending of the movie she looses all trust in the faun. The faun tells her that he needs a drop of blood from her baby brothers blood and she refuses to give it. He tells her that the only way she can return to her parents is to give a drop of blood but she completely refuses.
When she refuses to give in the child the faun tells her she will never see him again and she will not be able to go back with her real parents. As soon as the faun dissapeared her stepfather arrived and he made her give him the child. As soon as she did he shot her. She died and met up with her real parents. They told her everything was a test and that the last one she didn't fell, she passed because she didnt give an innocents childs life. She was allowed to live next to her real parents and forever be happy.
I think this movie has a good rhetoric. The way Ofelia uses her words and voice show the tone of the movie. The tone of the movie of the movie is questioning. Questioning because you cant really calculate whats gonna happen next but by the tone of her voice you know what she will or will not do.
